Film programme in the Film Museum in Amsterdam

In the year of the 100th anniversary of Jules Verne’s death, the Film Museum in Amsterdam shows how filmmakers have been inspired by Verne’s works. Besides famous Hollywood productions like 20.000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) and Master of the World (1961), the museum will show some lesser known Verne films, such as A deadly invention (Vynález zkázy, 1958) by the Czech animation filmmaker Karel Zeman, and the silent film Les enfants du capitaine Grant (1914) by Victorin Jasset. Two famous short Verne films by film pioneer Georges Méliès (1861-1938) will be shown as shorts.

On Saturday, 23 April, the Film Museum presents a special Jules Verne programme with unusual and unknown short movies that show the same fascination for technical progress as Verne displayed in his works. Modern technology and courage dominate films like Tachotypie (Max de Haas, 1935) and National Air Races at Cleveland Ohio (Emerson Yorke, 1944). This programme also includes Le rayon vert (1986), the fifth installment of the Comédies et proverbes cycle by nouvelle vague star Eric Rohmer, loosely based on the novel with the same title.
