Jules Verne exhibition in Emmen
From 21 March to 9 April 2005, the public library of Emmen will host an exposition organized by Joh. Faber from Emmen, a member of the Dutch Jules Verne Society. The exposition will focus on the novels and characters as used in the names of the streets in the industrial park Bargermeer in Emmen.
In the 1950s, when this quarter was constructed, it was decided not to resort to typical names such as Industrieweg, but rather to name these streets
Jules Verneweg – Kapitein Grantstraat – Kapitein Nemostraat Michael Strogoffstraat – Phileas Foggstraat – Paganelstraat – Albatrosstraat –
Nautilusstraat.
On 29 September 1958, Cornelis Helling congratulated the mayor of Emmen on this excellent initiative, on behalf
of the Société Jules Verne Paris. Later, on 2 October, the mayor was made “membre honoraire de la Société de Jules Verne”.
On the occasion of a recent expansion of the industrial park, the existing naming scheme was followed, and Kapitein Grantstraat –
Glenarvanstraat – Kapitein Hatterasstraat – Kapitein Antiferstraat – Michel Ardanstraat came into existence; the Dutch Jules Verne Society was asked
to suggest names.
The basis of the exposition in the library of Emmen will be a map of the Jules Verne quarter, with short texts about the name-givers of the streets, together
with illustrations from the novels.
With posters, photos, texts and engravings, we will give an impression of the life and works of Jules Verne. Obviously, there will be books on display, and the
famous blue covers will be among them.
